Driveshaft, Axle and Differential Service in Huntsville, AL

Rocket City Off Road is Huntsville's Driveshaft Shop
Our ASE-certified technicians repair and balance driveshafts and service axles and differentials. They also re-gear trucks and Jeeps that need a lower gear ratio after a tire upgrade.
Custom and Replacement Driveshafts
We build custom driveshafts for lifted trucks and Jeeps that need a different length or angle than stock, and we replace worn or damaged driveshafts with a direct-fit or custom unit.
Driveshaft Repair
U-joints wear out, slip yokes wear loose, and driveshaft tubes bend after an off-road hit. We diagnose the specific failure and repair or rebuild the driveshaft rather than defaulting to a full replacement when a repair gets the job done.
Driveshaft Balancing
An out-of-balance driveshaft causes a vibration that grows worse with speed and wears out U-joints and carrier bearings faster than normal. We balance every driveshaft we service on precision equipment before it goes back on the vehicle.
Axle Repair
We repair front and rear axles, including axle shafts, bearings and seals, on trucks, Jeeps and SUVs, 2WD and 4WD.
Differential Service
Regular differential fluid changes and inspections catch wear before it turns into a failed ring and pinion. We service front and rear differentials on the same visit as your other drivetrain work.
Re-Gearing
Larger tires change your effective gear ratio, and re-gearing restores the power and drivability you had before the tire upgrade. We install ring and pinion sets matched to your tire size and how you use the vehicle, from a daily driver to a dedicated trail rig.
Lockers
A locker forces both wheels on an axle to turn together, so a wheel that lifts off the ground on the trail still gets power. We install lockers alongside a re-gear when a build calls for both.

Should I Re-Gear After Installing Larger Tires?
Larger tires lower your effective gear ratio, even though the ring and pinion gears themselves have not changed. The formula is straightforward: divide your old tire diameter by your new tire diameter, then multiply that number by your current gear ratio.
For example, a truck with 26-inch tires and 3.55 gears that moves up to 28-inch tires ends up with an effective ratio close to 3.30. That drop in effective ratio costs the engine mechanical advantage, so the truck accelerates slower, tows less confidently and the engine works harder at speed to compensate. Re-gearing back toward the original ratio, or slightly lower for a heavier tire, restores the power the vehicle had before the tire change.
As a rule, a tire upgrade of 2 inches or less over stock rarely needs a re-gear. A jump to 33s or larger, especially on a truck used for towing or serious trail work, usually calls for it. Our technicians calculate the right ratio for your specific tire size and gear set before we quote the job.

Driveshaft Problems and Symptoms
A driveshaft or axle problem usually shows up as one of these signs. Use this list as a starting point, then book an inspection so we confirm the cause.
- Vibration that grows worse as you accelerate, often a sign of an out-of-balance driveshaft or a worn U-joint
- Clunking when you shift from park to drive or accelerate from a stop, often a sign of worn U-joints or a loose slip yoke
- Shuddering during acceleration, common on trucks with a worn center support bearing
- Drivetrain noise that changes with vehicle speed rather than engine RPM, often pointing to the differential or axle bearings
- Worn U-joints, which show up as looseness, rust stains at the joint or a clicking sound in tight turns
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Driveshafts, Differentials and Re-Gearing.
Should I re-gear after installing larger tires?
It depends on how much bigger the tires are. An upgrade of an inch or two over stock rarely needs it. A jump to 33-inch tires or larger, especially with towing or trail use, generally does. We calculate the exact effective ratio for your vehicle before recommending a re-gear.
What are the signs of a bad driveshaft?
Common signs include vibration that increases with speed, clunking when shifting into gear, shuddering during acceleration, clicking, and excessive drivetrain play.
These symptoms can also come from U-joints, carrier bearings, axles, or differential components, so proper diagnosis is important.
How much does it cost to re-gear a truck or Jeep?
The cost of re-gearing depends on the vehicle, axle configuration, ring and pinion gear set, labor requirements, and whether one or both axles need new gears.
4WD vehicles typically require matching gear ratios in the front and rear axles.
Provide your year, make, model, tire size, and current gear ratio, if known, and Rocket City Off Road can prepare a quote for your specific vehicle.
What is a differential locker, and do I need one?
A locker is a differential traction device designed to help both wheels on an axle receive drive force when traction conditions require it.
Whether you need one depends on your vehicle and how you use it. A street-driven truck may not need a locker, while a Jeep or truck used for demanding trails may benefit significantly from the additional traction.
Can a lift kit cause driveshaft problems?
Yes. Changing suspension height can alter driveshaft angles and operating geometry. Depending on the vehicle and amount of lift, this can contribute to vibration, U-joint wear, or driveshaft clearance and travel issues.
If you experience drivetrain vibration after installing a lift kit, we can inspect the driveshaft angle and related components.
Do front and rear gears have to match on a 4WD vehicle?
Yes. The front and rear axle gear ratios on a 4WD vehicle must be compatible. Mismatched ratios can cause drivetrain binding and damage when four-wheel drive is engaged.
A 4WD re-gear generally requires changing the gearing in both axles.
How long does driveshaft, axle or differential service take?
Service time depends on the repair and parts availability. Some driveshaft repairs and balancing services may be completed the same day. More involved axle, differential, locker, or re-gearing work can require additional time.
We'll give you an estimated timeframe after inspecting the vehicle and confirming the parts required.
